Steps to Stop Windows Password from Expiring

Microsoft has introduced the feature which expires your password after a certain interval. It is a fairly old feature, but you might see it out of nowhere. It requires the user to change their computer’s password after some months of use.

It is also tied to your Microsoft account (if you have logged-in), so if you have been using the same password on a computer but recently reinstalled Windows, you will still be required to change your password.

Initially, it will remind you that your password will expire in X days, usually starts a week before the password expires. For some users, the password never expires but for some, it expires without any reminder. So, it is a fairly annoying feature.

So, if you want to disable your Windows 10 or Windows 11 password from expiring, you can do so easily by following the steps in this article.

Steps to Disable Password Expiry in Windows PC:

Method #1 – For Pro edition:

These steps won’t work for Home edition of Windows computers. So, if you are having Windows 10 Home or Windows 11 Home, follow the Method #2.

Step 1 – Open Start menu, type lusrmgr.msc and then press Enter.

Step 2 – It will open Computer Management. Now expand the section Local Users and Groups and click on Users folder.

Step 3 – Double click on your username. Simply tick the option Password never expires. That’s all.

Method #2 – For Any Edition:

These steps will work on any edition of Windows, including Home edition. You can also use it for Pro editions, if you like to.

Step 1 – Open Start menu and type cmd. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

Step 2 – Type Set-LocalUser -Name “USERNAME” -PasswordNeverExpires. Replace USERNAME with your username and then press enter. That’s all.

Password Already Expired and You Can’t Change:

If the password has already expired for you and you are unable to change it, then you can try using your Microsoft account’s password in the old password section. If that does not work, try leaving the old password section blank and just set a new password.

Conclusion:

I hope this article was helpful to you in getting rid of the errors of “Your password has expired and must be changed.” and “Consider changing your password” due to it expiring soon. Be sure to share the article with others if it was helpful since they might end up with the same issue in the future.
