Telegram, trying to compete with WhatsApp, comes with tons of features for free and that’s one of the reasons why people love to use it. However, there is one problem which is faced by many Telegram users which is “Connecting…” issue, which is basically connectivity issues with Telegram servers.
For some users, it does not work at all. And for the others, it is slow or works after a long time. Some users cannot download files, photos, or videos fast while some cannot upload files quickly. And then you see somebody else having no issues and wonder why you are the one facing these problems.
So, if you are one of the users who are facing these issues then there could be several reasons why this might be happening with you. And you can follow steps mentioned here to fix slow or connecting issue in Telegram.
Why is there connectivity issue with Telegram?
It seems weird that they would be having connectivity issues, since even though they are providing most of the services for free, they are still having decent amount of funding. To be honest, these things happen rarely because of Telegram servers being slow or overloaded. It is usually because of your ISP or the DNS server you are using.
It cannot be entirely blamed to your ISP though. Telegram can improve things a lot by partnering with major peering partners of your country or use a well-known CDN provider.
So, there are several steps you can follow to fix it.
How to fix connectivity or slow issues with Telegram app or web?
As mentioned above, the major problem is usually your ISP. While Telegram does offer slightly slower download speed to their non-premium users, it is still not slow enough to cause significant issues faced by several people.
You can try to fix it by using different DNS server, by using a different official Telegram client, by using proxy or VPN, and the last option would be to switch to a different ISP.
#1 Switching to different Telegram client:
Telegram provides two clients for Android and the web. If you’re having issues in iOS then you don’t have any official alternative to try, however, there are plenty of unofficial clients which you can try. And yes, different official clients usually provide different experiences.
Telegram Web:
If you are someone who does not like to install apps on your computer, you might be using Telegram Web. So, if you are facing issues in it, try to switch to the other version of Telegram Web. There are two versions of the same, A and K. In my experience, K version works significantly better. A version is usually the default version.
To switch to the other version of web client, open Telegram Web > Hamburger Menu > Switch to K/A Version.
You can manually try both versions by simply replace A with K or vice versa, without switching to the other version, though it only takes a few seconds to switch between them.
If your experience remains poor in both then try using the desktop app for your operating system.
Telegram for Android:
If you are using Telegram on Android, then you can try using Telegram X. Yes, it lacks quite a bit of features, and the design feels a bit outdated compared to the original version but since they use different servers, it should help you get rid of the connectivity issues with Telegram app.
I know plenty of people who use Telegram X to download large files, since it downloads at much higher speed for them compared to the original app.
If you don’t wish to use a different client, then you might prefer using the other steps.
Telegram for iOS:
For iOS, there is no alternative client available officially by Telegram. So, you can only rely on unofficial clients, and they may or may not offer as good security and stability as the official client.
I recommend following other steps mentioned in this article to get over the issues instead of relying on the third-party apps available on iOS, but if you don’t want to then you may try Nicegram (though it is filled with crypto and AI stuff now, so you may not like it) or TG Connect app.
#2 Change DNS server:
It is not common for people to face issues due to DNS server in Telegram, but you might still face issues if you are using your ISP’s DNS server, and they are not great in maintaining them or have blocked Telegram servers in their DNS.
So, try switching to a different DNS server. I recommend using secure DNS from Google or Cloudflare. They are usually the fastest and by using encrypted DNS, there will be higher chances for you to avoid any site blocking done by your ISP.
#3 Use VPN or Proxy:
It might seem tiring, but you can use a VPN or proxy server to have better experience in Telegram. Proxy servers are often slow, especially the free ones. So, you might prefer using a VPN. This should definitely help you fix the connectivity issues in Telegram, unless their servers are having issues.
I recommend using Cloudflare WARP if you simply want to do your day-to-day work because it is free and usually works great. Apart from them, only Proton VPN can be considered a better free alternative. You can also use Windscribe for regular usage since they offer 10 GB per month.
Remember, free VPNs are not trustworthy, and they usually pay for the services they provide by selling your data. Cloudflare, Windscribe and Proton are quite known companies, so they are less likely to do so. I do not recommend using any random free VPN just because they are providing better server for your ISP.
If you can pay for VPN then I recommend looking for some privacy friendly VPN companies, such as Windscribe, Proton VPN and Mullvad.
Conclusion:
So, these were the options you can follow to avoid and fix connectivity issues in Telegram, whether it is “Connecting…” or slow speed download, or messages are being sent/received slowly. Changing client is usually enough to have a decent experience, but other options may help if changing client doesn’t help or if you don’t want to switch to a different client.
